Our experience of Operator Licence awareness training for drivers is one of confusion!
Drivers cannot understand what the benefit are to them, but our experience of the benefits is almost infinite.
In 2020, we undertook a transport manager refresher course as a one day driver CPC course and early in the course our trainer posed the question βWhat are the Operator Licence undertakings? He split them up into three groups and between the three groups they managed to come up with five undertakings – that is not even 50% of the overall undertakings expected of transport operators!
So, if transport managers can only come up with that many, what about drivers?
The majority of Operator Licence undertakings are directly linked to drivers. Below are a selection of these undertakings: –
To ensure vehicles are not overloaded
To ensure drivers hours are observed
To ensure vehicle are in a fit and serviceable condition at all times
To ensure speed limits are adhered to
When drivers explain to us that they do not understand why they are on an OLAT course you can see why they are clearly this taken about why it is relevant to them. At least a third of O Licence undertakings are directly linked to drivers and their behaviour and other undertakings, which are less specific also require the drivers input to ensure that they are adhered to.
In a way, our observation of OLAT for drivers is that they should simply do this course once per year for each year of their CPC cycle s if they are up to speed on this subject, they will be helping their employer to maintain and retain their O Licence and this will bring as many benefits as it is possible to bring from one CPC course and we always, ensure that drivers know how and why they should be aware of O Licence compliance and the benefits which it brings to a business.
