ADR TRAINING

ADR Training & Certification

It is required by UK law, that all drivers that carry dangerous goods by road, must undertake ADR training, in order to ensure they are able to do so safely.

Total Compliance are experts in transport training and compliance and we are approved ADR training providers.

What is ADR training?

UK law requires drivers carrying dangerous goods by road to undergo ADR training to ensure safe transportation. The ADR course covers both initial training and refresher training. Total Compliance is a nationwide transport training and compliance expert, and is an approved ADR training provider with two Dangerous Goods Safety Advisors (DGSA) on the team.

ADR stands for "Accord europƩen sur le transport des marchandises Dangereuses par Route" in French, which translates to "European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road" in English. It is a European agreement that sets the rules for the safe transportation of dangerous goods by road in Europe. The ADR training is a requirement for drivers carrying dangerous goods by road to ensure they can do so safely, as per the regulations set by the agreement.

Who needs ADR training?

ADR training and certification is mandatory in the UK for drivers who operate vehicles carrying tanks, certain tank components, and certain dangerous goods in packages. The drivers must attend an approved ADR training course and hold a valid ADR Vocational Training Licence issued by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

This is to ensure that drivers carrying such goods, can do so safely and that they are equipped
with the following:

  • An awareness of the hazards in the carriage of dangerous goods
  • The steps they can take in order to reduce the likelihood of an incident from occurring
  • The measures required to protect their own safety and that of the public and the environment, in the event that an incident does occur
  • Individual practical experience of any actions they will need to take

Are there different ADR courses?

Yes, there are up to four elements to ADR training:

  • The first is what is known as the ā€˜coreā€™ module, and is required by all drivers that carry dangerous goods (this includes some emergency first aid and fire extinguisher use)
  • The second element is the class modules. Drivers/companies can choose which ADR classes they want to be certified for and these range from one to nine and can be all nine or just one depending on the driverā€™s role or goods carried
  • The third element is the ā€˜packagesā€™ module, which is required by all drivers that carry dangerous goods in packages which are in scope of ADR regulations
  • The fourth element is ā€˜tanksā€™ and this is for those who drive tankers carrying dangerous substances

What are the Categories of Dangerous Goods that are Covered?

The UK categorizes dangerous goods into 9 classes, as specified in the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Regulations 2009:

  1. Explosives
  2. Gases
  3. Flammable liquids
  4. Flammable solids
  5. Oxidising substances and organic peroxides
  6. Toxic and infectious substances
  7. Radioactive materials
  8. Corrosive substances
  9. Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles (such as magnetised materials,
    spontaneously combustible substances, etc.)

These classes are based on the nature and properties of the dangerous goods, and the training for each class may vary based on the specific hazards involved.
