Practical Operator Licence Awareness Training for the people responsible for running a compliant PSV operation across Nottingham and the East Midlands – restricted licence holders, directors, coach operators, transport managers, community transport managers and anyone the Traffic Commissioner expects to demonstrate real, working knowledge of their obligations.
Our 2-day CILT-accredited course is delivered live and remotely, so operators from Nottingham, Mansfield, Newark, Worksop, Beeston, West Bridgford or anywhere else across the NG, DE and LE postcodes can attend without leaving the depot. You will leave with the practical knowledge to interpret brake test results, actively manage tachograph analysis and driver infringements, oversee vehicle maintenance systems, and evidence that compliance is happening in practice – exactly what the Traffic Commissioner now expects a practical OLAT course to cover.

A Practical Course, Not a Theory Session
Traffic Commissioner expectations have moved on. A course that only covers the licensing framework in principle no longer meets the standard. Delegates on Practical PSV OLAT explore how those requirements translate into the everyday management of a passenger vehicle operation.
The practical emphasis runs through the course:
Reading and interpreting brake test results, and recognising when further action is required.
Using tachograph analysis software to review driver data, identify infringements, investigate what has happened and record the follow-up.
Understanding what a robust vehicle maintenance system should contain, including maintenance planning, defect management, inspection records and oversight of maintenance providers.
Managing first-use inspections, preventative maintenance inspections (PMIs) and ongoing maintenance records.
Monitoring, reviewing and evidencing that compliance systems are actually being followed - not just documented.
The aim is to help delegates understand what effective PSV compliance looks like when it is being managed properly, and to leave the course with the knowledge to apply that within their own operation.

PSV OLAT Training Across Nottingham and the East Midlands
Nottingham and the East Midlands has a strong community transport sector using Section 19 and Section 22 permits. Practical PSV OLAT is well suited to permit holders wanting to strengthen the compliance systems behind their operations and to those considering transition to a full PSV operator licence.
PSV OLAT COURSE NOTTINGHAM
Nottingham City and NCT
Nottingham City Transport (NCT) is one of the UK's most awarded PSV operators – multiple UK Bus Operator of the Year holder – running the majority of local bus services from its Trent Bridge depot (NG2 3AJ). Trentbarton (part of the Wellglade Group) runs premium cross-city services from its Heanor and Langley Mill depots into Nottingham, and Kinchbus serves the Loughborough-Nottingham corridor. Nottingham is unusual in retaining a strong municipal operator alongside private operators, and compliance standards across the city's PSV network are demonstrably high. Practical PSV OLAT gives the responsible people the working knowledge to sustain that.
Mansfield, Worksop and North Nottinghamshire
Newark, the A1 and East Nottinghamshire
Mansfield, Worksop and Ashfield are served by Stagecoach East Midlands' Mansfield depot (NG18) alongside independent coach operators serving school, contract and private hire markets across the NG17-NG22 postcodes. The area's former mining communities have generated a distinctive community transport sector, and the A60, A614 and A617 corridors carry significant coach and school transport activity. Practical PSV OLAT translates operator licence undertakings into the day-to-day systems that keep operations compliant across a wide rural catchment.
Newark-on-Trent (NG24) sits on the A1 and hosts a mix of coach, school and community transport operators serving the eastern half of Nottinghamshire and into Lincolnshire. Marshalls Coaches, TravelWright and other independent operators are well established, and the A1 corridor generates significant long-distance coach activity. Practical PSV OLAT is well suited to operators managing coach fleets across long working days and multi-day tour work.
Beeston, West Bridgford and the Wider Nottingham Conurbation
The wider Nottingham conurbation extends across Beeston, West Bridgford, Bingham, Long Eaton and into Derbyshire, with strong cross-boundary PSV operations linking Nottingham to Derby and the East Midlands Airport. Trentbarton's cross-boundary services and the Kinchbus Loughborough-Nottingham corridor generate significant Traffic Area cross-over, given Derby sits in the North Western Traffic Area while Nottingham sits in the North Eastern. Practical OLAT covers the operator licence implications for cross-Traffic-Area operations.
Wider Coverage
The course is equally suitable for operators based in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Hucknall, Arnold, Carlton, Bingham, Bulwell, Kimberley, Eastwood, Retford and Southwell. Anywhere across the NG postcodes – and equally suitable for operators in neighbouring Derby (DE), Leicester (LE) and Lincoln (LN) subject to cross-Traffic-Area considerations – delegates can attend Practical PSV OLAT without travelling.
Who Needs OLAT?
What Does the PSV OLAT Cover?
If you hold a restricted PSV licence, you are not required to have a qualified Transport Manager – but you are subject to the same core compliance obligations around vehicle maintenance, drivers' hours, tachograph compliance, driver licensing, roadworthiness and notification requirements. The Traffic Commissioner expects those responsibilities to be understood and managed, regardless of licence type.
OLAT is the recognised way to build that knowledge. In Nottingham and the East Midlands, this is particularly relevant for smaller coach operators, school transport providers and private hire businesses where the responsible person may need to demonstrate a strong working understanding of PSV compliance.
Even if your operation has a qualified Transport Manager, directors cannot simply delegate compliance and assume responsibility ends there. Senior people need enough knowledge of the regulated environment to oversee the operation effectively, challenge concerns and understand whether compliance systems are working as intended.
The East Midlands has a strong community transport sector using Section 19 and Section 22 permits, particularly in rural Nottinghamshire and around Mansfield and Newark. Practical PSV OLAT is well suited to permit holders wanting to strengthen the compliance systems behind their operations and to those considering transition to a full PSV operator licence.
If you have been directed to complete OLAT as a condition of your licence following a Public Inquiry in the North Eastern Traffic Area, our course meets that requirement. The certificate of completion is recognised by Traffic Commissioners and is suitable for submission as evidence at a Public Inquiry.
An overview of the PSV licensing system, including the differences between standard, restricted and special restricted licences. We cover the specific obligations that attach to each licence type, along with Section 19 and Section 22 permits for community transport and when a permit holder may need to transition to a full PSV licence.
What the Traffic Commissioner expects from PSV operators, including the undertakings given at licence grant, operating centre management, vehicle authorisation limits, disc management and the requirement to notify relevant changes. The course also considers the management of registered or contracted passenger services where these form part of the operation.
Vehicle maintenance is at the heart of a compliant PSV operation. The course helps delegates understand what a robust maintenance system should contain, including maintenance planning, defect management, inspection records and effective oversight of maintenance providers.
PSV vehicle maintenance extends beyond the mechanical basics to include passenger doors, wheelchair ramps and lifts, emergency exits and other safety-critical equipment. We cover what the DVSA looks for during inspections and how to make sure maintenance systems stand up to scrutiny across bus, coach and community transport operations.
PCV driver licensing, Driver CPC requirements, drivers' hours rules for PSV operations, tachograph compliance and DBS checking where required. Delegates consider the practical use of tachograph analysis software – how to review driver data, identify infringements, investigate why they occurred, record follow-up and recognise recurring patterns of concern.
The course covers the Public Service Vehicles Accessibility Regulations and the practical responsibilities operators need to understand around accessible passenger transport. This is particularly relevant where vehicles are used for home-to-school work, rail replacement, local bus services or other passenger operations with accessibility obligations.
How to maintain an evidence trail that shows compliance information is being reviewed, problems are being identified, action is being taken, recurring issues are being monitored and operator licence undertakings are receiving active oversight. This is a central theme throughout Practical PSV OLAT.
Real-world examples from Traffic Commissioner decisions and DVSA enforcement activity. Understanding what the regulator looks for, how Public Inquiries work in the North Eastern Traffic Area, and what leads to licence action.
