Practical Operator Licence Awareness Training for the people responsible for running a compliant HGV operation across Sheffield and South Yorkshire – operator licence holders, directors, transport managers, compliance staff and anyone the Traffic Commissioner expects to demonstrate real, working knowledge of their obligations.
Our 2-day CILT-accredited course is delivered live and remotely, so operators from Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster or anywhere else across the S and DN postcodes can attend without leaving the yard. You will leave with the practical knowledge to interpret brake test results, actively manage tachograph analysis and driver infringements, oversee vehicle maintenance systems, and evidence that compliance is happening in practice – exactly what the Traffic Commissioner now expects a practical OLAT course to cover.

A Practical Course, Not a Theory Session
Traffic Commissioner expectations have moved on. A course that only covers the licensing framework in principle no longer meets the standard. Delegates on Practical HGV OLAT explore how those requirements translate into the everyday management of a goods vehicle operation.
The practical emphasis runs through the course:
Reading and interpreting brake test results, and recognising when further action is required.
Using tachograph analysis software to review driver data, identify infringements, investigate what has happened and record the follow-up.
Understanding what a robust vehicle maintenance system should contain, including maintenance planning, defect management, inspection records and oversight of maintenance providers.
Managing first-use inspections, preventative maintenance inspections (PMIs) and ongoing maintenance records.
Monitoring, reviewing and evidencing that compliance systems are actually being followed - not just documented.
The aim is to help delegates understand what effective HGV compliance looks like when it is being managed properly, and to leave the course with the knowledge to apply that within their own operation.

HGV OLAT Training Across Sheffield and South Yorkshire
South Yorkshire is one of the country's busiest freight and logistics regions, sitting on the M1 north-south spine and served by the M18, A1(M) and A57. The iPort Doncaster inland freight terminal, the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Rotherham, and the M1 J32-J34 distribution corridor between them anchor a substantial haulage, distribution and 3PL operator base. The following overview gives a sense of the operators and locations the course typically serves.
HGV OLAT COURSE SHEFFIELD
Doncaster, iPort and the A1(M) Corridor
Doncaster is one of the country's most significant inland freight hubs. iPort Doncaster on the A638 (DN11 0GH) hosts Amazon, Lidl, CEVA and Fellowes distribution operations alongside a rail freight terminal, and the wider borough is home to major fulfilment centres for DFS, B&Q and Next. The A1(M) J35 to J38 corridor concentrates one of the highest densities of HGV movements in Yorkshire. Practical HGV OLAT is directly relevant for operators here, whether running national multi-drop networks, contract distribution or specialist port-related traffic.
Rotherham, the AMP and the M1 J33-J34 Corridor
Sheffield and the M1 J31-J34 Distribution Zone
Rotherham hosts the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Waverley alongside heavy engineering, steel and metal recycling businesses across the M1 J33-J34 catchment. Templeborough Rolling Mills, Liberty Steel Rotherham and the wider metals cluster generate substantial specialist HGV activity, and Rotherham's location on the M1 corridor makes it a base for regional and national hauliers serving Yorkshire, the East Midlands and beyond. Operators here face particular scrutiny around load security and weight compliance – both core elements of Practical OLAT.
Sheffield's HGV operator base spans city-centre construction traffic, the Meadowhall retail supply chain and the manufacturing operations of AESSEAL, Outokumpu and others. The Wincobank and Tinsley industrial corridor sits directly on the M1 J34 and hosts distribution and metal recycling operations serving Yorkshire and the wider region. Practical HGV OLAT helps operators here strengthen the systems behind operator licence undertakings, particularly where own-account and hire-and-reward work sits alongside each other in the same fleet.
Barnsley, the M1 J36-J38 and the Dearne Valley
Barnsley and the Dearne Valley sit directly on the M1 J36-J38 and host a growing distribution sector centred on Junction 36 industrial estates, ASOS's Grimethorpe fulfilment centre and Symphony Group manufacturing. Waste and recycling operators are prominent across the borough, and construction traffic serving the M1 J37 developments generates significant HGV activity. Practical OLAT supports operators managing the tension between high vehicle utilisation and consistent compliance oversight.
Wider Coverage
The course is equally suitable for operators based in Ecclesfield, Chapeltown, Stocksbridge, Dinnington, Wath-upon-Dearne, Wombwell, Rawmarsh, Mexborough, Thorne and Adwick-le-Street. Anywhere across the S1-S25, S60-S66, S70-S75 and DN1-DN12 postcodes, delegates can attend Practical HGV OLAT without travelling.
Who Needs OLAT?
What Does the PSV OLAT Cover?
If you hold an HGV operator licence - standard national, standard international or restricted - you are responsible for making sure your operator licence undertakings are met in practice. OLAT gives you a clear understanding of what those undertakings mean day to day, and how to manage them effectively.
Even when an operation has a qualified Transport Manager, the Traffic Commissioner does not accept that directors can simply delegate compliance. Appeal court decisions have established that business owners must themselves possess sufficient knowledge of the regulated environment to effectively oversee operations. Many Liverpool and Merseyside operators send their directors, compliance managers and operational staff through the course alongside their Transport Manager.
Practical HGV OLAT is a useful refresher for existing Transport Managers keeping up with regulatory change, and a strong foundation for anyone preparing for the Transport Manager CPC qualification.
If you have been directed to complete OLAT as a condition of your licence following a Public Inquiry in the North Eastern Traffic Area, our course meets that requirement. The certificate of completion is recognised by Traffic Commissioners and is suitable for submission as evidence at a Public Inquiry.
If your business is working towards DVSA Earned Recognition, or simply wants to strengthen internal compliance standards, OLAT can help build the knowledge needed to manage the systems those frameworks depend on. The course is especially useful where responsibility for compliance is shared between several people.
An overview of the goods vehicle operator licensing system, including the differences between standard national, standard international and restricted licences. We cover the obligations that attach to each licence type, professional competence requirements, financial standing and good repute.
What the Traffic Commissioner expects from HGV operators, including the undertakings given at licence grant, operating centre management, vehicle authorisation limits, disc management and the requirement to notify relevant changes.
Vehicle maintenance is at the heart of a compliant HGV operation. The course covers what a robust maintenance system should contain, the Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness, brake testing requirements, walk-round check standards, and the evidence the DVSA may expect to see during inspections or desk-based assessments.
EU and domestic drivers' hours rules for goods vehicle operations, tachograph compliance and working time requirements. We cover the practical use of tachograph analysis software: how to review driver data, identify infringements, investigate why they occurred, record follow-up and recognise recurring patterns of concern.
HGV driver licensing requirements, Driver CPC and driver management systems. Delegates consider the records that should be kept, the checks that should be carried out and how to identify issues before they develop into wider compliance failures.
Load security and weight compliance remain among the most common enforcement issues for HGV operators, and roadside checks along the M1, M18, A1(M) and A57 catch this out regularly. The course covers operator responsibilities for load security, weight compliance, and the systems that should be in place to prevent overloading.
How to maintain an evidence trail that shows compliance information is being reviewed, problems are being identified, action is being taken, recurring issues are being monitored and operator licence undertakings are receiving active oversight. This is a central theme throughout Practical HGV OLAT.
Real-world examples from Traffic Commissioner decisions and DVSA enforcement activity. Understanding what the regulator looks for, how Public Inquiries work in the North Eastern Traffic Area, and what leads to licence action.
