FORS Safe Driving: Raising Standards Across the Road Transport Industry
Too many preventable incidents on UK roads still involve commercial vehicles. That’s why the FORS Safe Driving standard exists — to help fleet operators reduce risk, raise professional standards, and demonstrate a genuine commitment to road safety.
Developed as part of the wider Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS), Safe Driving is a key component of accreditation. It focuses on measurable improvements in driver behaviour, vehicle safety, training, and incident prevention — giving operators a practical framework for building safer, more responsible fleets.
What Does FORS Safe Driving Involve?
FORS Safe Driving sets clear expectations that go beyond basic legal compliance. Across Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, operators are assessed against a number of key safety areas:
- Driver licence checks and regular fitness-to-drive declarations
- Driver CPC and structured safe driving training
- Fatigue and distraction management policies
- Accident and near-miss reporting procedures
- Use of telematics, dashcams, and in-vehicle tech
- Evidence of ongoing safe drive training and monitoring
This framework ensures that operators embed a culture of responsibility, with clear systems for safe driving training for employees at all levels.
What is FORS Professional Safe Driving (Formerly Safe Urban Driving Training)?
FORS Professional Safe Driving is the updated name for the training course formerly known as Safe Urban Driving training (SUD). While the core content still covers urban safety, vulnerable road users, and professional driving conduct, the name change better reflects the comprehensive, modern scope of the training.
The course is a FORS-mandated requirement for silver accreditation and includes:
- Risk awareness in congested and urban areas
- Defensive driving techniques
- Real-world insight into vulnerable road user experiences
- Emphasis on hazard perception and situational awareness
Previously referred to as Safe Urban Driving, the course is now delivered under the FORS Professional brand. However, operators and drivers are still required to complete safe urban driving periodic training to remain compliant, typically as part of periodic CPC hours.
