Introducing the MPRS: What Operators and Workshops Need to Know
As part of our commitment to keeping our clients informed and prepared, Total Compliance would like to highlight an important development that’s just come into effect across the commercial vehicle industry:
The Maintenance Provision Rating Scheme (MPRS), officially launched on 29 April 2025, is a new initiative aimed at raising maintenance standards and helping both operators and workshops make better, more informed decisions.
What Is the MPRS?
The MPRS is a voluntary, nationally recognised rating scheme designed to assess and benchmark commercial vehicle workshops.
Developed by the Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE) and supported by the DVSA, it provides a clear, structured way to evaluate maintenance providers based on:
- Workshop facilities and equipment
- Technical staff competence
- Management systems and documentation
- Readiness for alternative fuel and future technologies
Workshops are awarded ratings from ‘Qualified’ (meeting essential standards) to ‘Platinum’ (demonstrating advanced capabilities and forward-thinking practice).
MPRS Rating Levels:
Workshops will be awarded one of five ratings:
- Qualified – Meets minimum standards for legal compliance and functional operation
- Bronze – Demonstrates foundational best practice and some future planning
- Silver – Shows well-structured systems, trained staff, and broader service capabilities
- Gold – Operates to high standards across all areas, with a proactive approach to improvement
- Platinum – Represents industry-leading practice, innovation, and full readiness for future transport technology
Each level builds on the last, helping workshops identify clear steps for development and offering operators a trusted benchmark.
Why It Matters for Operators
For operators, the MPRS provides transparency and confidence when choosing a maintenance provider.
Until now, there’s been no formal system to measure how well a workshop actually performs. The MPRS bridges that gap—offering assurance that a provider meets recognised standards and is committed to continuous improvement.
Key benefits:
- Make informed decisions based on verified criteria
- Reduce the risk of vehicle defects and prohibitions
- Strengthen your Operator Licence compliance
- Support your own internal maintenance systems
A higher-rated workshop means greater accountability, improved reliability, and ultimately a safer, more compliant fleet.
What This Means for Workshops
For maintenance providers, MPRS is an opportunity to stand out, build credibility, and show customers that your service goes above and beyond.
Participating in the scheme can:
- Enhance your professional reputation and visibility
- Provide a framework for improvement
- Attract new clients seeking quality assurance
- Support staff development and internal processes
As the scheme grows, we expect it to become a key differentiator in the commercial vehicle maintenance market.
