With the requirements for training constantly changing it is essential that your business is ready and prepared to ensure your drivers keep up to date with their knowledge and qualifications.

Since the introduction of Driver CPC this was a good starting point for your drivers to get regular training to help them improve on their knowledge and skills and remain up to date with the industry developments.

The DVSA over the years are making changes to make the CPC scheme more efficient and structured and companies need to be on board with the changes.

The five courses every five years, should be done as one course per year for five years and by doing so your drivers will be constantly kept up to date with the changes and their qualification cards will not expire unless there has been some oversight on the number of courses already done.

When planning training here are some key considerations: –

Make a list of all the possible training needs for staff

What formal qualifications do your drivers need such as ALLMI, IPAF or ADR

Expiration dates for your drivers qualifications

How many courses have they already done towards their next card

Is there any deficit in Driver CPC hours to date

What are the key areas which your drivers need improving or refreshing on like first aid

Are there specific training needs for the industry

It is accepted that it is the drivers qualification and it is not up to companies to ensure their qualifications are kept up to date. That said, the DVSA does expect companies to take a pro-active approach to the training to ensure that the drivers are making the best of their five yearly training cycle and are not simply choosing cheap courses to tick boxes. Like any training opportunity, your drivers WILL benefit from the training even if they say they wonโ€™t and if they are NOT benefiting from the training, it is probably their attitude or approach to training rather than that they cannot be taught anything.
