A question was raised today with one of my clients – If you have a three axle lorry can you legally drive with the lift axle raised if the total weight is more than 18 tonnes. The gov.uk website states that a vehicle is deemed to be overweight if any of the axle weights are more than on the plating certificate or if the total weight of the lorry and load is more than the maximum gross vehicle weight. In our case the front axle maximum weight was 10T and the drive axle weight was also 10T. The actual axle weights were 9.5T and 9.7T respectively so neither was overweight with no load on. Of you have any concerns regarding plating and testing please feel free to get in touch and we could assist you with your query.
